What does this whole ';you can put lipstick on a pig but its still a pig'; thing actually mean?

It means that you can try to pretty up the outside of something, but that doesn't change what it really is.

A pig is still a pig, with or without lipstick on.What does this whole ';you can put lipstick on a pig but its still a pig'; thing actually mean?
Obama made a metaphorical statement...

Palin calls herself a pitbull with lipstick, so many people speculate that Obama was referring to Palin (or Palin's policies) as a prettied-up facade (lipstick) on the outside, but in truth, it is still crap/dirty (pig allusion).

Honestly, that was uncalled for---Obama should not insult pigs that way. What does this whole ';you can put lipstick on a pig but its still a pig'; thing actually mean?
It means ';WE AIN'T GOT ANYTHING NEW TO OFFER, SO LETS KEEP AWAY FROM POLICY AND TALK ABOUT LIPSTICK'; I must sign off and get to my stockbroker to get some shares in lippy.

Can't the Republicans understand the rest of the world see them as bringing the once great nation of America into one of the most despised. Making a mountain out of the comment on lipstick, makes them look even more of a problem than the Bush administration.

It means that Mccain can talk about being so different from Bush, and how he's a Maverick, and a candidate for change, and all that, but at the end of the day, his policies are pretty darn close to those of George Bush. Like a wolf in sheep's clothing, he's still a wolf. There's a better metaphor, with no Sarah Palin confusion.
Well here's a metaphor for Obama, you can dress up a terrorist in a suit and give him a silver tongue, but underneath he's still a terrorist.

He will ruin America if he gets elected.
It was a metaphor for the Republican party and a parody of Sandra Python's speech - quite clever really. But the Reps, cynically and disingenuously, turned it into a personal attack on Python.
it means you can glam somthing up with falseness and fakeness, but when it comes down to it the ugliness of the person is still going to there, no matter how well u disguise it... Beauty's only skin deep and all that carry on...
It means you can try to prettify something that's ugly or unpleasant, but it remains ugly or unpleasant. It's a fairly common expression in the USA.
same as the saying you cant polish a tu rd, it means that it is still what it is and nothing can change that
you can put lipstick on but your still gonna luck ugly
it means u can dress up you political policys (with lipstick ) but they are still crap policys (pig )
He was thinking about Hillary. He's still pissed.
That dressing up policies does not change the policy!
